Day Trip Guide to Camden, Maine
Camden is, perhaps, the most charming town on the entire coast of Maine. Quaint downtown shops, shingled homes, lobstermen bringing their daily catches to shore, and a stunning New England landscape all make Camden an excellent day trip in Maine. Although it gets its fair share of tourists, there’s something so authentic about this coastal town. In fact, its authenticity is why filmmakers chose Camden for all of the Maine shots in the 1995 Casper movie (such a classic). Don’t miss a chance to stop in Camden on your trip to the Maine coast! This travel guide will cover how to get there, when to visit, and the best things to do on your day trip to Camden.

Getting to Camden, Maine
Camden is situated on the mid-coast of Maine about halfway between Portland and Bar Harbor. The closest international airport is in Bangor (the home of Stephen King) which is about an hour and 20 minutes away. The Portland airport isn’t much further at less than a two-hour drive. There are several regional airports close by as well.
Camden makes for a perfect day trip from Portland or a stop on your way up the coast to Acadia National Park.
Best Time to Visit Camden, Maine
Summer is certainly the most popular time to visit Camden. The weather is nearly perfect and lobster shacks are in full swing. Although this is a fun and gorgeous time to visit, there are a couple of drawbacks to summer. Camden is a popular getaway, and June through August is peak tourist season. Expect crowds, particularly on weekends and holidays, and plan for congestion along Highway 1.
Fall is a great option (autumn in New England is never a bad idea). Early through mid-September stays fairly warm, so if you want summer-like weather without the crowds, visit in September after Labor Day but before fall colors. October starts to get chilly but brings impeccable autumn leaves. Colors usually peak in mid-October, but keep an eye on this fall-foliage tracker to time your trip
For comfortable weather with fewer crowds, mid-September is the best time to visit. For fall colors, head to Camden in early-mid October.
Things to Do on a Day Trip to Camden, Maine
Relax at Harbor Park
It’s no surprise that the heart of this coastal town is Camden Harbor. Benches on the park lawn offer the perfect spot to relax and watch the ships pull in and out of the harbor. A roaring waterfall nearby adds a unique aspect to the otherwise serene landscape. Grab a spot in the park and pause for a moment to take in the view.
Explore the Camden Amphitheater
Across the street from Harbor Park is another lovely green space. The grounds of the Camden Amphitheater and the adjacent public library are magical. Stone paths surround the brick structures climbing with ivy and lined with perfectly manicured shrubs. It’s a beautiful spot to take a walk, relax, or snap a few photos.
Meander around the quaint downtown streets
Going for a stroll downtown and popping into a few shops or restaurants is a great way to spend the afternoon. Zoot Coffee is a delicious stop for a warm drink and a light breakfast. When you’re ready for lunch, head to Long Grain for some award-winning Thai food. For classic seafood and lobster, try Peter Ott’s on the Water.
Walk along the pier
You can’t visit Camden without taking a stroll by the seaside. While you’re on the pier, watch the fishing boats coming in with their haul. It’s fascinating to watch the lobstermen at work and feels like such a quintessential Maine experience. Just remember to let them do their work in peace and avoid interrupting them with a bunch of questions or commentary.
Admire the gorgeous homes around the High Street Historic District
For a little change of scenery, head to Camden’s High Street Historic District. This area is filled with gorgeous shingled homes and brick mansions. Drive around and enjoy the view on your way to the next stop on this list.
Drive up to Mount Battie Overlook for an impressive view
End your day in Camden at Mount Battie Overlook. Located at the highest point in Camden, this view overlooks the entire town and surrounding water. It’s a beautiful way to cap off a lovely day on the coast. There is an entrance fee of $9, but, I’m telling you, it’s worth it.
Camden is everything you imagine when you think of Coastal Maine. This adorable town was my favorite stop on our Maine road trip. Whether you have a full day or only a few hours, it’s well worth a visit!
